Feenstra Helps Introduce Legislation Requiring Environmental Protection Agency to Use GREET Model to Measure Emissions Reductions of Iowa Biofuels

November 1, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra (R-Hull) helped introduce – alongside U.S. Reps. Dusty Johnson (R-SD), Adrian Smith (R-NE), Angie Craig (D-MN), and Mark Pocan (D-WI) – the Adopt GREET Act. This legislation would require the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to use the GREET model when calculating comprehensive emissions reductions and the environmental impact of Iowa ethanol, biodiesel, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

“The GREET model has proven to be the most accurate and reliable tool for measuring the emissions reductions and environmental impact of Iowa ethanol, biodiesel, and sustainable aviation fuel. Time and time again, this model confirms that homegrown ethanol and biodiesel help cut emissions, lower gas prices, and restore American energy independence,” said Rep. Feenstra. “I fully endorse the use of the GREET model to accurately assess and convey the benefits of biofuels – including sustainable aviation fuel – for our economy, our energy security, and our environment. I am proud to work with my Midwestern colleagues to require the Biden administration to adopt the GREET model, which would be a major victory for our families, farmers, biofuels industry, and rural communities.”

“The future of Iowa’s biofuels industry relies on adoption of the GREET model. By reducing the carbon-intensity score of liquid fuels – including sustainable aviation fuel – Iowa can help lower gas prices for American families and end our reliance on foreign oil,” said Kelly Nieuwenhuis, a corn grower from Primghar, Iowa. “I appreciate Congressman Feenstra’s unwavering commitment to our farmers and biofuels producers and thank him for supporting legislation to make the GREET model the law of the land.”

The Adopt GREET Act would further require that the EPA modernize its modeling every five years or issue a report to Congress outlining efforts to adhere to the latest science and technology.
