Feenstra Joins Ways and Means Republicans in Urging IRS to Crack Down on Non-Profit Fraud and Abuse

January 21, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra (R-Hull), member of the House Ways and Means Committee, joined Chairman Jason Smith and all Republican members of the Committee in sending a letter to the Acting Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner Scott Bessent and IRS Chief Executive Officer Frank Bisignano to urge stronger oversight and accountability of the nation’s non-profit sector amidst the ongoing fraud scandal in Minnesota.

The Ways and Means Committee has referred 11 non-profits to the IRS through its investigations of fraud, terrorism ties, and foreign influences, which found that stolen funds may have been wired to regions of Somalia with links to Islamic terrorist group, Al-Shabaab. With 1.8 million tax-exempt organizations generating over $1.4 trillion annually, the Committee warns that urgent reform is needed to protect taxpayers and restore public trust.

“Like many Iowans, I have been disturbed by the recent headlines of rampant taxpayer fraud in Minnesota,” Rep. Feenstra. “These scandals expose serious failure in oversight during the Biden Administration that allowed taxpayer dollars meant to help our most vulnerable, be exploited and wired overseas to dangerous actors. That is simply unacceptable. I fully support Chairman Smith’s efforts to ensure that the IRS takes a hands-on approach to enforcing the law and holding bad actors accountable. I will continue working alongside President Trump and my Republican colleagues to protect taxpayer dollars and restore trust in our welfare system.”
