Feenstra-led Sarah’s Law Passes U.S. House of Representatives as Amendment to Laken Riley Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra (R-Hull) voted for, and the U.S. House of Representatives passed, the Laken Riley Act, which includes Feenstra-sponsored Sarah’s Law as an amendment to detain and prosecute illegal immigrants who harm or kill American citizens.
Feenstra has introduced Sarah’s Law every Congress since his first election.
“After years of advocacy, I am thrilled that Sarah’s Law was included in the Laken Riley Act, which passed the House of Representatives and is now headed to President Trump’s desk for his signature. Nearly a decade ago, 21-year-old Sarah Root’s life was tragically cut short when she was killed by an illegal immigrant who was driving while drunk. Instead of answering for his crimes, the illegal immigrant posted bail, was released from jail, and never seen again,” said Rep. Feenstra. “Sarah’s Law not only delivers justice for the Root family but also ensures that any illegal immigrant who harms or kills an American citizen is swiftly detained and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. With President Trump in the White House, we will continue to secure our border, build the wall, and combat heinous crimes committed by illegal immigrants.”
“My beautiful daughter, Sarah, was taken from us way too soon at the hands of a criminal who should have never been in our country. It is just common sense for illegal immigrants who harm or kill American citizens to be detained and punished,” said Michelle Root, Sarah’s mother. “I so appreciate Congressman Feenstra for introducing Sarah’s Law to honor my daughter and fight for justice. He is a champion for our communities and a dear friend who has worked tirelessly to make this day I’ve been waiting for a reality.”
