Feenstra Votes to Combat Fentanyl Crisis, Hold Criminal Drug Traffickers Accountable

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra (R-Hull) voted for, and the U.S. House of Representatives passed, the HALT Fentanyl Act, which permanently lists all fentanyl-related substances under Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act and empowers law enforcement to swiftly confiscate fentanyl and other deadly substances at our border and throughout our country.

“In 2022, nearly 110,000 Americans died from a drug overdose – 75,000 of whom were killed by synthetic opioids like fentanyl. It’s unacceptable. Too many families – particularly in rural Iowa – have lost a loved one to this devastating epidemic because President Biden refuses to secure our open border,” said Rep. Feenstra. “I proudly voted for the HALT Fentanyl Act to hold dangerous drug traffickers accountable for their crimes and equip our law enforcement officials with the tools they need to confiscate deadly drugs, protect our families, and save lives. In Congress, I remain committed to real solutions to the opioid epidemic because one premature death is one too many.”

Under current law, fentanyl related substances will no longer be registered under Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act beginning on January 1, 2025. This legislation would permanently place fentanyl and other related substances under Schedule I to remove incentives for the creation of new fentanyl related substances and ensure that our border patrol and law enforcement agents can effectively do their jobs and protect our communities.
